Big Government has broken yet another story.
Apparently, FEMA has awarded ACORN with a "fire prevention" grant for $997,402.00. The grant was awarded on September 4, 2009.
I called the FEMA office handling this case for comment. I spoke with a receptionist who said that I was the fifth person in almost three minutes to call about this story. He sent me to the voicemail of Catherine Patterson, the Program Officer for the Fire Prevention and Safety Grants. According to this, Ms. Patterson is "responsible for the technical monitoring of the stages of work and technical performance of the activities described in the approved grant application."
I asked Ms. Patterson to call me back, and I will update this post in the event that she does call me back.

ACORN was awarded $450,484.00 on August 29, 2008. Why did their grant funding double one year later?
I checked funding years 2004-2006, and ACORN did not receive any funding from FEMA for "Fire Prevention"

I filed a FOIA request last week on the $997k grant. I called and got someone who understood what I was looking for and why but said he could not provide the information. He quietly suggested that I file a FOIA request and "see what you can get." The few details I have getting about the 2007 grant award was it was for smoke detectors and home fire safety inspections. I'm sure that while they were there they spoke of politics, had fliers, register to vote forms, and other handy information while they were installing the smoke detectors and doing the "home safety inspections." I can't prove that at this time however that seems to be the pattern they have been using.
I think we are just hitting the tip of the iceberg on the grant issues. I suspect that under every subsidiary of ACORN is applying for any and all grants possible to fund what it is that they do. I suspect that little of the grant is really about the purpose of the grant but rather about the personal level of outreach they can get to people. They are just using our tax dollars to employee people for the ultimate end goal which is political gain.
